The Engine
Take a closer look at the engine, the true heart of the mine. This mighty beast is unusual as it has a vertical rather than a horizontal winder.
It is one of only two surviving in the country and the only one still in its original position, so a piece of history well worth seeing!
Originally the engine was powered by two steam driven pistons that could reach speeds of up to 30mph, but today the engine is turned by an electrical motor rather than by steam.
Driver For a Day
The main job of the engine house was operating the engine - without this no coal could be collected at all.
Get a feel for life working on the mine and take prime position as the driver. Situated within the lower floor take your place and go hands on in the driving seat.

The Gallery Exhibition
Take a walk through history on the top floor of the engine house entering the gallery exhibition.
Marvel at original artefacts used by the miners and see through the eyes of a miner using original images of the working mine.
Feel part of history through the miner's family tree wall, even adding your own name to the wall!
